A stripped-back kitchen rebuilt in warm maple shaker cabinetry, with granite carried from the countertop all the way up the wall.
A home kitchen is a focal point for family activity, and an island is where that activity collects. This one was sized to take seating on the long side without narrowing the walking route behind it, which is the compromise that gets an island wrong more often than any other.
Storage runs the full length of the island rather than stopping at the seating overhang, so the units nearest the stools still hold something useful. Cabinetry around the perimeter was kept in the same white finish to stop the room breaking into two halves.
Task lighting sits over the island and general lighting covers the perimeter, so the surface is properly lit for prep instead of being shadowed by whoever is standing at it.
